CBBF Press Release: Positive Drug Test Appeals, non-acceptable grounds for appeal
In light of recent events, the CBBF Doping Control/Appeals Committee provides the following clarification with respect to drug test appeals. Specifically, the Committee will no longer accept appeals based on the following grounds,
- The possibility that appellant’s belongings may have been tampered with.
- Supplements were consumed by the appellant without knowing what is in those supplements.
Background
Tampering:
In the past, appellants have asserted that their belongings were left unattended and therefore were susceptible to tampering. It has been further claimed that tampering can result from conflicts between athletes and facilitated by the large number of people coming and going backstage.
It is the decision of the Committee that each and every athlete shall be solely responsible for their belongings. Since it may be necessary for athletes to bring food or water back stage, we recommend that athletes lock their bags when left unattended. Each athlete shall be responsible for their belongings and what they consume.
Supplements consumed without knowing contents:
In the past, appellants have asserted that they have consumed supplements without knowing what is in those supplements.
It is the decision of the Committee that each athlete shall be solely responsible for what they consume and shall be fully aware of the current list of banned performance enhancing substances. A list of these substances can be found on the CCES (Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sports) at www.CCES.ca
The CCES has the only IOC (International Olympic Committee) accredited lab in Canada, the CBBF utilizes the CCES in performing the drug testing and we adhere to their policies.
The CBBF doping control policy can be found on our website at www.cbbf.ca. The CCES policy can be found on their site at www.cces.ca or by calling 1-800-672-7775.
Any questions or concerns with regards to this policy may be directed to the attention of the chair at kam@eastlink.ca or by calling 902-826-1733 (Nova Scotia).
